How To Fix a Lazy Boy Recliner Footrest?

Recliners are one of the most comfortable pieces of furniture on the modern market. It provides comfort and relaxation for people all over the United States. However, it is not ideal and tends to break now and then. In this article, I want to discuss how to fix a lazy boy recliner footrest in your home.

Why do recliners get damaged?

Recliners get damaged due to a lack of care and attention. Repairs are common with recliner chairs, as they go through a lot of wear & tear every day. The most common damage is footrest breakage, especially when pets or children are around the house. For this repair, we will be fixing a lazy boy recliner footrest from the rippling effect caused by over-extending the leg rest.

How to fix the stuck recliner footrest?

With a little bit of elbow grease, you should be able to fix the footrest. There is a high chance that It has already rusted or dried out if this is an older chair. However, let’s go and try to fix this recliner chair before spending money on a new one. We are going to try and fix this one first before giving up! 

  • The first thing you need to do is remove the fabric covering from the leg rest, allowing you to access the holder frame, electric spring, and others. Once you have removed all screws to take off the panel, move the fabric-covered board to upright.
  • What you want to do now is pull down on the underside of the footrest until it snaps free. This is a little different from the electric recliner. Check out my article about electric armchairs.
  • Flip it back over and take your hand grinder with a sanding wheel attachment.
  • If your lazy boy recliner has seen better days, then use that sanding wheel attachment to grind down the bottom of the runner until it is nice and smooth. This will allow your armchair to be better in upward and downward movements.
  • Then simply disassemble all the screws and inject brand-new screws in the screw holes.

How to fix a sagging recliner footrest?

If your recliner footrest is sagging and not staying up, then there may be something underneath holding it down. This can easily fix his problem with a little bit of WD40 around the hinges (or footrest screws) and around the plastic feet at the bottom of the leg rest.

How to fix a recliner footrest locking mechanism?

Suppose your lazy boy recliner locks but doesn’t release when you press the footrest down. This is a common problem and can happen to almost any recliner. Lazy boy recliners especially have some issues with the footrest lock mechanism; we will be fixing that in this tutorial. The problem with this one is simple: the plastic tool broke & I had to buy a whole new footrest part!

What you will need: 

  • Phillips head screwdriver 
  • Screwdrivers (if you don’t have Allen keys for pully screws) 
  • A new locking mechanism that requires two screws & some basic mechanical knowledge of how it works (the whole thing costs around $10)

Remove the fabric covering and flip it back to access screws underneath. After that, remove all screws, unplug wires and carefully take off the outer casing. You will now see a minor pully system with two screws holding down this footrest mechanism, which we need to replace. Stake out both screws carefully, so they don’t fly away & get lost! 

New screw in place, ready to be screwed down! Now simply bent the recliner footrest and got everything back together again. Doing in the reverse order, you can quickly put all the recliner mechanisms.

How to fix recliner footrest springs?

You now know how to fix a broken recliner footrest or sagging lazy boy footrest. So now that we have taken care of all repairs let’s talk about how to place a new recliner spring. This will require you to spend some time but will save you hundreds of dollars. How to repair one of the main problems with recliners which are springing

What you will need: 

  • Screwdriver & Allen key set (if your chair requires it) 
  • Socket wrench set with extension bar (for older chairs – if your chair is new, then use screwdrivers instead)
  • These are standard tools for fixing most things around the house, but make sure you don’t use too much force when tightening down screws as they can break off. Re ember to be patient and take you!

The first step is to remove the fabric covering around your recliner mechanism. Once you have that off, you need to find two screws holding down the footrest runner. After that, slowly pull up on the leg rest until it is free from the chair! 

The next step after this is simple: flip over your old spring if it isn’t broken and screw in your new one by placing the metal end at the bottom of the footrest & simply tightening with an Allen key or socket wrench. Thigh ten all screws once again and put everything back together again. Just make sure not to break any more parts & enjoy your newly fixed lazy boy recliner footrest!

How To Fix A Lazy Boy Power Recliner Footrest?

There are a few things that you can do to try and fix a Lazy Boy power recliner footrest. If the footrest is not working at all, then the first thing you should do is check the fuse. The fuse for the footrest may have blown, so you can try replacing it to see if that fixes the problem.

If the footrest is not working correctly, then you can try adjusting the height of the footrest. Sometimes this can fix the problem. You can also try cleaning the footrest with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris that may be causing it to not work properly.

What to do when the Lazy Boy recliner footrest is stuck?

There are a few things that can be done when the footrest on a Lazy Boy recliner becomes stuck.

One option is to use a screwdriver or other tool to pry the footrest open.
